Question:

Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve been highly self-conscious about my nipples. They are flat and hardly protrude at all. Is there a surgical option to correct this? And if so, how much does it cost?

Answer:

While it is possible for flat nipples to be surgically altered so that they are erect, it is important to understand that this change will be long-lasting. The nipple is made erect through surgery that encourages the formation of scar tissue; once this scar tissue forms, the nipple will typically not return to a flat state.

There are multiple factors that influence the cost of this procedure. Typically, surgeons charge approximately 1000-1500 per nipple. What type of anesthesia you elect to use will also influence the overall cost of the procedure. There are many options available, including office based local anesthesia with oral sedation versus twilight anesthesia, and general anesthesia which require an anesthesiologist. If you opt for twilight or general anesthesia rather than local anesthesia, the cost of the procedure will be increased. Likewise, it is more expensive to have the surgery performed in a surgi-center or hospital. It is possible for this procedure to be done in the office in some cases. Make sure you discuss all of these factors with your surgical team prior to making a decision.
