Question: Do you ever perform Breast Reduction on men who have Gynecomastia? My son is 19 years old and very concerned that the breasts that show through his clothes. It affects his clothing choices and what he does in his free time. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to help him feel more confident to go to workout and go swimming.

Answer: Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia is a surgical procedure that reduces excessive breast tissue in males after medical conditions are determined not to be the cause for abnormal breast development.

According to recent data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of the male population. Unfortunately, it sometimes causes feelings of psychosocial distress for young men, inhibiting clothing choices in certain public settings such as beaches or work out facilities.

This procedure is an outpatient procedure lasting one to two hours. Enlarged breasts may be reduced through liposuction techniques and sometimes excising excess tissue may be required. Results are typically permanent with the benefit of a firm and more contoured chest. Most patients are able to resume normal activities, including vigorous exercise within two weeks. More importantly, they typically experience a significant improvement in their confidence and self-image.
