Question: I tend to go braless a lot when wearing tank tops and camisoles, especially in the summer. Could this have long term negative effects on my breast shape? Do you have any advice for how to help prevent breast sagging or help prevent worsening of my sagging breasts?

Answer: If your breasts are not properly supported, your breast ligaments can over stretch, which can make your breasts droop or sag. If your breasts are not supported, gravity can help to make breasts, especially heavy/large ones, sag or droop. It is important even for small breasted women to wear proper fitting bras in order to help maintain breast shape. There are a few measures women can take to try and help prevent or worsen breast sagging. Women should try to maintain a healthy weight, always wear a bra with a tight fit against the chest wall and regularly exercise upper body muscles as well as their entire body. If you are not sure what bra provides your breasts with good shape and support, I recommend seeing a lingerie expert who will guide your choices.

Some factors that contribute to sagging (ptotic) breasts are unavoidable; like aging, genetics, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and dramatic weight changes. Keep in mind, there are excellent and safe surgical solutions to correct sagging breasts that may or may not also look deflated. I offer a procedure called Mastopexy (”breast lift“) with or without “breast implants” (breast augmentation). Once we have had a comprehensive consultation and full informed consent has been reviewed, these surgical procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Breast lifts with or without breast implants are ways to restore breast shape when all other methods have not helped. Over the 20 years I have been in practice, I have found these safe procedures offer significant satisfaction to properly selected patients who wish to improve their breast shape and size with surgical options like breast lift (mastopexy) with or with breast implants.
