Breast Augmentation and Suicide, Fact or Fiction?

breast augmentation

There is no proven association between Breast enhancement surgery and suicide, despite recent reports that women in a Swedish study who had breast augmentation surgery appeared to have a higher incidence of suicide than the general population.

Many published scientific reports do not support this confusing conclusion. In fact, in 2006 in the USA over 300,000 women chose to have breast enhancement surgery according to ASPS and ASAPS. And according to published data, women who have had Breast Augmentation surgery are extremely satisfied. So this Swedish study actually contradicts the published data that shows women who have had breast enhancement have had improvements in body image, quality of life and depressive symptoms.

It is important to have realistic expectations if you are considering breast augmentation. The psychological aspect of plastic surgery is very important and definitely should be addressed with your surgeon during consultation. Here are some questions derived from an article on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons site that may help you determine if you are a good candidate for plastic surgery:

Are you a suitable candidate for Plastic Surgery?

  • Why do you want surgery?
  • What expectations do you have?
  • Are there outside influences that make plastic surgery seem crucial?
  • Are you a perfectionist seeking a the perfect alteration to make you just right?
  • Have you mentally prepared yourself for physical change?
  • What if not all post operative comments are positive- can you handle this?
  • Is this surgery to repair a physical defeat/cosmetic flaw?

Answering these questions can help give your personal and moral compass direction but remember it is always crucial to have a consultation with caring knowledgeable plastic surgeon before setting your decision in stone.
