Liposuction, also known as lipolysis, was first introduced in the 1960’s to offer the first surgical means to remove small deposits of fat. By the 80’s, liposuction techniques vastly improved with the introduction of suction-assisted lipolysis. Suction-assisted lipolysis involved the use of cannulas to infuse fluid into tissues and the use of a vacuum suction technique to remove unwanted fat. By 1985, the tumescent technique, super wet liposuction technique and other variations were introduced to offer more predictable results. By the 1990’s, ultrasound technology was introduced to facilitate fat removal by first liquefying the fat using ultrasonic energy.
