Learn more about Kybella™- Chin Contouring for Submental Fat Improvement

Neck liposuction, also referred to as submental liposuction, is a minimally invasive procedure targeting excess fat along the jawline and neck to create a youthful, more defined appearance. Casas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery utilizes neck lipo to provide dramatic results without the need for invasive surgery and long downtimes. Patients are selected when they desire a more youthful neck, and they have fair to excellent neck skin elasticity.

Dr. Laurie Casas Discusses Chin Liposuction and Neck Lift

Procedure Overview

Liposuction of the neck is performed under local anesthesia with sedation using three tiny incisions hidden underneath the chin and behind the ears. When performed by itself, neck liposuction is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. It is a safe procedure and delivers predictable youthful recontouring of the neck.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?

The ideal candidates for neck lipo are men and women in good overall physical and mental health and are unhappy with the excess fat and fullness of their neck and jawline areas. The best results are seen in candidates with fair to excellent skin elasticity who have realistic expectations of the procedure.

Ultimately, having fair to excellent skin elasticity is the best predictor of excellent results. With that being said, Dr. Casas has performed neck lipo on men and women from the age of 18 to 60. During the first appointment, Dr. Casas will evaluate and determine if you are a good candidate for neck liposuction.

How Much Does Neck Liposuction Cost in Chicago?

The cost of neck liposuction in Chicago can vary due to many different factors. There is a wide range in the overall costs, but typically the price will range from $3,000 to $5,000. The surgeon’s experience and expertise are two determinants when it comes to the cost of the procedure. Plastic surgeons with more experience are in more demand and will be more expensive.

The geographical location of your surgery will also play a role in the overall cost of the procedure. Large cities, such as Chicago, have higher demands for cosmetic procedures and higher operational costs for practices, resulting in increased costs.

What to Expect During a Consultation for Neck Liposuction

During your initial consultation at Casas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Casas will evaluate the neck, jawline, and elasticity of your skin to determine if neck fat removal is appropriate. A review of your medical and surgical history will be performed to ensure that it is safe for you to proceed with the surgery. Dr. Casas will obtain your desires and expectations of the procedure and determine if any additional procedures are necessary. Once a customized plan is determined, you will be provided with the total cost of the procedure and the financing options available for the procedure.

Before the appointment, it is important to determine your goals for the procedure and browse the chin lipo before and after photos. This will make it easier to express your wishes with Dr. Casas.

Recovery From Surgery

During the first few days following the procedure, bruising and swelling are expected and should resolve during the first week. The maximum amount of discomfort will be experienced during the first few days and improve quickly as most patients can return to work within one to three days after surgery. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided for seven days after surgery.

Beginning immediately after the procedure and for up to twelve months after that, the neck skin shrinks leaving you with a youthfully contoured neck. To aid in reducing swelling and contouring loose skin, a compressive garment may need to be worn, as much as possible, post-operatively for a few weeks.

Risks Associated with Neck Liposuction

The decision to undergo neck liposuction is a personal decision based on your goals. However, all surgeries are associated with risks. Therefore, it is important to understand the risks and ensure the benefits of the procedure outweigh them before proceeding with surgery. The risks of neck liposuction include:

  • Numbness under the chin
  • Collections of blood under the skin (hematoma)
  • Collections of fluid under the skin (seroma)
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Infection
  • Damage to nerves
  • Anesthetic complications (i.e. allergic reactions)

Procedures Combined with Neck Liposuction

Depending on your goals, neck liposuction can be combined with other procedures to provide a greater degree of rejuvenation and target many problem areas with one surgery. Although this can increase the cost and recovery time associated with neck liposuction, it may be cheaper than performing the procedures individually. Common procedures that are paired with neck liposuction include:

  • Neck lifts. Neck liposuction is ideal to remove the excess fat under the chin. A neck lift can help tighten loose or sagging skin, as well as tighten the underlying muscles, enhancing the youthful appearance.
  • Facelift. A facelift can take years off the face by eliminating wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin that occur with aging. This can be combined with neck liposuction when a double chin or submental fullness is present to contour the face and neck further.
  • Rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty or “nose job” can dramatically improve the overall appearance of the nose. Combining the rhinoplasty’s aesthetic appearance with a more defined jawline after neck liposuction can significantly enhance the overall facial balance.

Neck Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions

Ideal candidates for neck or submental liposuction in Chicago are those who suffer from persistent fat under the chin or along the neck that has not responded to diet and exercise. Good candidates usually:
  • Have good skin elasticity, which allows the skin to retract smoothly after fat removal.
  • Are in good health and have maintained a stable weight.
  • Are nonsmokers or willing to quit for the procedure and the recovery.
  • Want to improve neck definition without undergoing more invasive procedures like a full neck lift.
  • Have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.
Individuals with significant skin laxity, prominent neck bands, or sagging tissues may benefit more from a neck lift or facelift, which can be combined with liposuction if needed.
Neck liposuction can target multiple zones for improved definition and contour.
  • The submental area, directly beneath the chin, is the most commonly targeted treatment site and the primary focus of improving the dreaded double chin.
  • The jawline can be refined by removing small fat deposits to enhance definition and create a better transition between the face and neck.
  • The upper neck can also be treated to smooth fullness beneath the jaw and improve the angle between the chin and neck.
Neck liposuction, neck lift, and facelift procedures all enhance the appearance of the neck, but each serves a distinct purpose, depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals and anatomical needs. Neck liposuction focuses exclusively on removing localized fat deposits beneath the chin and along the jawline to create a more defined contour. This approach is best suited for individuals with good skin elasticity and mild to moderate fat accumulation who wish to achieve a slimmer neck profile without addressing skin laxity. In contrast, a neck lift targets loose or sagging skin and tightens the underlying platysma muscles, effectively improving the appearance of “turkey neck” or vertical banding that often occurs with age. Meanwhile, a facelift provides a more comprehensive rejuvenation, addressing the lower face and neck simultaneously to correct jowls, deep folds, and significant skin sagging. When fat accumulation is the primary concern, neck fat removal in Chicago alone is typically sufficient to achieve a sleek, youthful contour. However, if the patient also exhibits skin laxity or muscle separation, combining neck fat removal with a neck lift procedure may deliver more balanced, natural-looking, and longer-lasting results.
Yes. Double chin surgery in Chicago is one of the most effective treatments for reducing a double chin caused by excess fat beneath the jawline. This procedure removes stubborn fat deposits that create a heavy or rounded appearance in the lower face. This results in a jawline that appears sharper and a more defined neck-to-chin angle. It is important to note, however, that if the double chin is caused by loose or sagging skin rather than fat, liposuction alone may not correct the issue. In such cases, the surgeon may recommend a skin-tightening procedure or neck lift in conjunction with neck fat removal.
Recovery after neck fat removal in Chicago is typically straightforward. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to go home the same day. After surgery, a compression garment is worn around the chin and neck to help minimize swelling and support the newly sculpted contour. Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are normal during the first week and usually resolve within 10–14 days. Most patients describe minimal discomfort after neck liposuction, and over-the-counter pain medications are usually sufficient. Light activity can resume within a few days, but strenuous exercise should be postponed for about one to two weeks to avoid disturbing the healing tissues. Keeping the head elevated while resting and following postoperative instructions can help optimize results.
Visible improvement from neck liposuction can often be seen within a few weeks, once initial swelling subsides. The neck and jawline become progressively more refined as residual swelling diminishes over time. Final results are typically achieved within three to six months, as the skin continues to contract and conform to the new contours.
Some swelling and bruising are normal after neck liposuction, especially during the first few days. Bruising may occur around the chin and upper neck and generally resolves within one to two weeks. Wearing a compression garment as recommended by the surgeon helps control swelling and encourages the skin to adhere to the new shape. To minimize swelling, patients are advised to sleep with their head elevated, avoid bending forward, and refrain from strenuous activity until cleared by their surgeon. Most swelling subsides significantly after two weeks, with continued subtle improvements over the following months.
The results of neck or submental liposuction in Chicago are considered permanent because the fat cells removed during the procedure do not return. However, remaining fat cells in the area can enlarge with weight gain, so maintaining a consistent weight is key to preserving results. While the fat reduction from neck fat removal is lasting, the skin and underlying tissues will continue to age naturally. Over time, mild loosening may occur, but this process can be minimized with healthy habits, sun protection, and proper skincare.
Most patients can return to work or normal, non-strenuous activities within five to seven days after neck liposuction. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for two to three weeks to prevent complications. However, the exact recovery timeline depends on the extent of the surgery and the individual's healing process.
Neck liposuction in Chicago is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat from the neck and under-chin area to enhance one’s contours and definition. Sometimes referred to as submental liposuction or chin liposuction, the procedure targets localized fat deposits that can make the neck appear bulky or less defined.  The procedure is performed using small incisions beneath the chin or behind the ears, and a thin tube called a cannula is inserted. Through gentle suction, excess fat is removed from the neck and jawline, revealing a more sculpted appearance. Because fat cells are permanently removed, the results of neck liposuction are long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight.
