Botulinum toxin injections (BOTOX) are used for the treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and “crow’s feet” associated with aging or unwanted facial expressions. Dysport is a new FDA-approved botulinum toxin injection used to improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines in adults younger than 65. Like BOTOX, Dysport is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. While FDA-approved in the US in 2009, it has been approved for cosmetic use in Europe since 1990. Dysport will help relax facial muscles that create unwanted wrinkles, such as frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. After Dysport is injected into the muscle, the muscle is relaxed for 12 to 16 weeks, or even longer.

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a new FDA-approved toxin injection for the treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows. Jeuveau can also be used to treat and relax forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other unwanted facial creases. Frown lines and wrinkles occur due to overactive facial muscles that control facial expression (smiling, squinting, etc). After Jeuveau is injected into the facial muscles, those muscles remain relaxed for 12 to 16 weeks, sometimes longer.

Xeomin, made with Botulinum Toxin type A, is a prescription medication used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar frown lines. It was approved by the FDA in 2011. Xeomin is in the same category as BOTOX and Dysport; the main difference is that it does not have additives. It is possible that the lack of additives in the product could have an advantage for patients, as they are less likely to develop resistance to Xeomin.

Daxxify is an FDA-approved neuromodulator used to soften moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Daxxify works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, helping to smooth the skin and create a more refreshed, youthful appearance. It can also be used in other areas of the upper face, including the forehead and crow’s feet. One of the distinguishing features of Daxxify is its long-lasting formulation, with results for many patients lasting longer than those of other wrinkle relaxers.
