Question: What do breasts look like after the implants are removed and what if replacements aren’t wanted? Will the breast then be smaller than the original size? Saggy?
Answer: The breasts will look exactly like they did before the augmentation if the implant was placed under the muscle. Only the changes of aging, hormones and weight will affect the breast tissue that sits over the implant. If, however, the implant was placed over the muscle and was very large there may be sagging from the weight of the implant that stretched out the skin. But it should be noted that when […]
The breast implants’ approval by the FDA was not fine-print free. Women must weigh the impact, and costs, of follow-up care.
By Melissa Healy, Times Staff Writer November 27, 2006
The days before Thanksgiving are typically quiet in the offices of plastic surgeons. But a long-awaited decision to approve silicone breast implants for women older than 22 prompted a flurry of excited calls and inquiries last week from prospective patients.
The giddy welcome may not last. Even as the two U.S. manufacturers of silicone implants gleefully projected a surge in demand for their products, physicians began poring over the fine print of […]
Recently, a myth started in the lay press that breast augmentation using your own fat could be performed during your lunchtime. Unfortunately, as appealing as this may be it is not true. The procedure of using your own fat that is removed from your body and then injected into your breasts may be a safe procedure however as a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon I would recommend that you wait until the clinical research is complete. As a member of our two major Societies, ASPS (American Society of Plastic surgery) and ASAPS (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) we only want […]
There is no proven association between Breast enhancement surgery and suicide, despite recent reports that women in a Swedish study who had breast augmentation surgery appeared to have a higher incidence of suicide than the general population.
Many published scientific reports do not support this confusing conclusion. In fact, in 2006 in the USA over 300,000 women chose to have breast enhancement surgery according to ASPS and ASAPS. And according to published data, women who have had Breast Augmentation surgery are extremely satisfied. So this Swedish study actually contradicts the published data that shows women who have had breast enhancement have […]
Question: I’ve heard that breast implants have to get replaced every 10 years, is that true and why?
Answer: This is not true. Breast implants do not need to be replaced every 10 years. However, saline and silicone implants do deflate slightly over time and replacement may be something some women consider. At 10 years the rates are about 10 percent for saline and 15 percent for silicone.

Dr. Laurie Casas is quoted in an article posted in the March 2008 issue of Health Magazine. The article, Plastic Surgery by the Decade, covers 3 different age brackets of women who get breast enhancement procedures.
35 to 50 year old women account for more than half of all cosmetic breast procedures. Dr. Casas accounts for this saying,
“Most women want to get rid of the sagging due to the combined effects of gravity and years of having babies”

Question: What causes saggy breasts and will breast feeding increase my chances of sagginess? If a breast lift is deemed necessary will my cup size change? What is typical recovery time for a breast lift?
Answer: There are two main factors that cause breasts to sage; one being changes in breast size and the other is poor skin elasticity! Changes in breast size most often occurs when you lose weight or during the pregnancy and nursing period. Keep in mind that deciding to breast feed will also increase your chance for sagginess, more so if you have poor skin elasticity.
If you […]
Dr. Casas is quoted in a Web Exclusive with Newsweek about the importance of weighing out the pros, the cons and the long-term consequences of breast implants:
“It’s like any decision you make,” Casas says. “You listen to the pros and cons and you weigh them.”
Since breast implants have boomed in popularity in the past number of years, it is now the most common cosmetic procedure for women; therefore it’s easy to overlook the potential complications involved with this surgery. Dr. Casas adds:
“Women must think of this as a very, very serious decision, because you are electively choosing to put a […]
Question:I had several surgeries for fibroid tumors, polyps and cysts resulting in a hysterectomy. I have an enormous abdomen (probably a lot of scar tissue too) now that I can’t get rid of. Should I pursue abdominoplasty or liposuction?
Answer: The best way to judge whether an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or liposuction is best for you would be by taking a look at your situation. Typically when your abdominal skin and subcutaneous tissue rolls over when you sit down, a tummy tuck is needed. When the abdomen has tight skin that bulges from fatty deposits which are diet and exercise resistant, […]
