BREAST AUGMENTATION: One Woman’s Story

Pregnancy, weight loss, breast feeding, and the ever-present gravitational forces can make a woman’s breasts sag and appear empty or deflated. Breast lift, with or without breast implants, is a surgical procedure to at least temporarily reshape sagging and often wide breasts.

Many women desire a breast lift, called a mastopexy, because pregnancy and breast feeding have left them with less volume in their breasts and stretched skin that has lost its elasticity. While there are no special risks that affect future pregnancies such as interference with breast feeding, Dr. Casas recommends postponing breast lift surgery until you have had all your children since pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and offset the results of the procedure.

Dr. Casas will examine your breasts she will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure including the size and shape of your breasts, the elasticity of your skin, and whether an implant is advisable. If your nipples point downward due to sagging of your breasts, Dr. Casas will discuss the proper higher repositioning of your nipple and areola during the procedure.

Typically, patients undergo general anesthesia for breast lift surgery. Techniques during the breast lift surgery vary, and together you will select the procedure and incisions that will best meet your expectations.

After surgery, Dr. Casas will place bandages which will be removed after two to three days. Pain and bruising will be managed with supplements and medications.

Healing is a gradual process. You will be up and about in a day or two and you may return to work as soon as a few days, depending on how you feel. Dr. Casas will ask you to avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks to prevent the scars from spreading.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, administered by massage, is used after each procedure to reduce swelling. The number of sessions is individualized.
