Dr. Casas and her staff will evaluate your chin’s shape, contour and position and evaluate whether what you see is something you were born with or whether aging has created signs of aging you would like reversed. A combination of nonsurgical treatments as well as minimally invasive surgery may be recommended. These may include daily skin care, laser treatments, injections with dermal fillers and stimulators as well as neck liposuction.

Take a look at the following facial procedures:

A well-defined jawline is essential in establishing symmetry between facial features, enhancing aesthetic appearance, and boosting self-confidence. However, the effects of aging or genetics can leave many unhappy with the shape or size of their jawline. Jawline contouring procedures can improve jawline definition to better frame a woman’s face for a more elegant and refined appearance or a man’s face for a strong and masculine appearance.

Procedure Overview

Non-surgical jawline contouring uses dermal fillers or Botox injections to enhance the appearance and definition of the jawline. Using a jawline filler such as KYBELLA™,  Dr. Casas can redefine, recontour, and restore volume within the chin and jaw. Botox injections, on the other hand, can reduce the size of the jaw muscles, creating a slimmer appearance of the face above the jawline. Injections of Botox into the neck muscles allow the upper face muscles to properly lift the skin, improving the contour and definition of the jaw.

The benefits of non-surgical contouring include:

  • Immediate results without the need for surgery and general anesthesia
  • Minimal to no recovery
  • Less pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising
  • Less expensive in the short term

The downsides of surgical contouring include:

  • Results are temporary, lasting 3–4 months (Botox) to 12–24 months (fillers)
  • Requires refresher injections that can eclipse surgical costs in the long term
  • Limited in the degree of improvement they can provide

Surgical jawline contouring is an operation to contour the jawline, improve the angular dimensions, and enhance the side and front profile of the face. In cases where the lower face is too wide or square, jaw reduction surgery may be an option. However, in cases with an under defined jawline, corrective jaw surgery with or without the use of implants can be performed.

The benefits of surgical jawline contouring include:

  • A greater degree of correction
  • A long-lasting and often permanent solution for improving the shape of the jawline
  • Virtually no scarring as incisions are made within the mouth

The downsides of surgical contouring include:

  • Longer recovery requiring time away from work
  • Requires general anesthesia
  • Associated with risks common to surgical procedures

Am I a Good Candidate for Jawline Contouring?

Good candidates for jaw contouring procedures typically are unhappy with the size or shape of their jawline and have a weak jawline, an asymmetric jaw, or an overly prominent jawline. These procedures are ideal for men and women of any age in good physical and mental health. Candidates should be non-smokers and have realistic expectations of what these procedures can accomplish.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Casas will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for a jawline contouring procedure. At this appointment, Dr. Casas will answer all your questions to ensure you have the information to determine which procedure is best for you.

How Much Does a Jawline Contouring Procedure Cost?

In Chicago, the non-surgical options can range between $600 to $1,200 per treatment, depending on the number of syringes of dermal filler or Botox needed to achieve the desired results. However, when it comes to surgical options, the price range can vary significantly depending on the degree of correction and whether implants are needed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of jawline contouring surgery is around $18,000. However, in some cases, the cost can approach or even exceed $50,000.

Many factors determine the overall cost of these procedures, including the expertise and experience of the surgeon, the geographic region, and the extent of surgery needed. During the initial consultation, Dr. Casas will provide you with an individualized care plan with the total costs of the procedure. Being upfront with pricing helps to eliminate any confusion and to prevent any surprises during recovery.

What is Included in the Cost?

The cost of jawline procedures in Chicago is calculated based on the inclusion of several fees, not just the amount of your procedure. The total price will include surgeon fees, post-operative appointments, and any post-surgical bandages or garments needed after the procedure. This fee also includes the cost of support staff utilized before, during, and after surgery.

Surgical jawline contouring procedures are performed under general anesthesia in surgical facilities capable of providing this service. Therefore, the cost of using these facilities and anesthesia personnel is included in the final cost.

Factors That Determine the Cost of the Procedure

When determining the cost of jawline procedures in Chicago, a customized approach is employed for each patient, as no procedure is the same. Factors that can affect the overall costs of these procedures are discussed below.

Surgeon Experience and Expertise

Board-certified plastic surgeons invest a significant amount of time and money in staying current on surgical techniques and advancing surgical technology. The high quality of care provided by board-certified plastic surgeons results in them being in high demand which leads to higher costs.

An experienced neck lift surgeon is essential in providing the best results while minimizing the risk of complications. Although the upfront costs may be higher, complications from a botched procedure can result in additional surgeries costing more time and money.

Surgical Location

Surgical jawline procedures are performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgical facility or hospital resulting in additional surgical site fees that impact the total cost.

Non-surgical procedures are performed in the comfort of our office and do not include the extra facility and anesthesia fees associated with surgical procedures.

Geographic Location

Larger cities, such as Chicago, will have higher costs due to the increased demand for these procedures and higher operational costs.

Is Jaw Contouring Surgery Covered by Insurance?

The quick answer to this question is that it depends. If the surgery is performed to help treat functional problems such as severe bit discrepancies or sleep apnea, then your insurance may provide coverage for this procedure.

However, if the procedure is being performed for cosmetic reasons, then your insurance company will not cover the procedure. Thus, it is important to contact your health insurance provider before setting up an appointment if you feel the procedure may be covered.

Are Financing Options Available?

Yes. At Casas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we are committed to helping every patient obtain the self-confidence they deserve. We understand the financial constraints of paying for a significant surgery, and thus, we provide financing options allowing you to pay for the procedure over time. Available options will be discussed at the initial consultation. However, it is essential to ensure the procedure’s cost is within your current budget before proceeding.

What to Expect During a Consultation for Jawline Contouring

During your initial consultation at Casas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Casas will examine the neck and jawline and evaluate the overall symmetry of your facial features. To ensure the safety of a procedure, your medical and surgical history will be reviewed during this appointment. Dr. Casas will discuss your desires and expectations of the procedure and help determine if any additional procedures are necessary to achieve your goals. Once an individualized plan has been determined, you will be provided the total cost of the procedure and the financing options available.

To better achieve your goals, it is recommended that you browse before and after photos and write down specific wishes. This will make it easier to remember and express your wishes with Dr. Casas during the appointment.

Recovery From Jawline Contouring Procedures

Depending on whether you choose to undergo a surgical or non-surgical procedure, the recovery timeline can be significantly different. Below we discuss the expected recovery for each procedure.

Recovery from non-surgical procedures

The first few hours to days after the procedure, mild redness, swelling, and bruising is expected but will typically resolve on its own within a couple days. The discomfort from the procedure is minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter medications, if needed.

Most patients can return to work shortly after the procedure but should avoid wearing make-up, performing strenuous exercises, drinking alcohol, and laying on your face for one to two days after surgery.

Recovery from surgical procedures

The first few days following the procedure, bruising and swelling are expected and should reach a maximum around day three after your procedure. Discomfort and pain is expected, but this can be managed with the prescription medications provided.

After about one week, the swelling should begin to resolve with the majority of it subsiding approximately six weeks after surgery. However, it may take up to six months before swelling is completely gone and your final results become visible.

Most patients will return to work ten days after the procedure. Daily activities are able to be resumed at this time as well, but strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Casas.

Risks Associated with Jaw Contouring Surgery

Undergoing a non-surgical injection has considerably less risks than surgical options. However, there are still some risks that should be considered such as redness, allergic reactions, infection, and formation of nodules.

Surgical options on the other hand, can be associated with more risks that are important to understand before proceeding with the procedure. The risks of surgical jawline contouring include:

  • Numbness under the chin, which improves with time
  • Collections of blood under the skin (hematoma)
  • Collections of fluid under the skin (seroma)
  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Infection
  • Damage to nerves
  • Anesthetic complications (i.e. allergic reactions)

Procedures Combined with Jawline Contouring

Depending on your goals, non-surgical and surgical jawline contouring can be combined with other procedures to enhance the rejuvenation potential and the overall symmetry of the face with one surgery. The addition of other procedures can increase the cost and recovery time associated with jawline contouring but can be cheaper than performing the procedures individually. Common procedures used in combination with jawline contouring include:

  • Neck lift and/or neck liposuction. To better enhance the definition of the jawline and neck following a procedure, a neck lift can be used to help tighten loose or sagging skin and the underlying muscles. Additionally, neck liposuction can remove the excess fat under the chin to give a more chiseled appearance.
  • Facelift. A facelift can take years off the face by eliminating wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin that occur with aging. This can be combined with jawline contouring to further contour the face and neck.
  • Rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty or “nose job” in combination with jawline contouring can dramatically improve the overall symmetry of the face and significantly improve your aesthetic appearance.
  • Cheek implants. Improving the appearance of the cheeks and jawline can further enhance facial symmetry and provide a more youthful appearance.
